Ítem 1st Global Consensus for Clinical Guidelines for the Rehabilitation of the Edentulous Maxilla: A Single-Round Survey on Sinus Lift and Alveolar Bone Augmentation Techniques.(John Wiley & Sons Ltd, 2026-02) Brunello, GiuliaObjectives: The objective of this survey study was to collect expert insights on the rehabilitation of the edentulous maxilla involving adjunctive procedures such as sinus lifts and other bone augmentation techniques. This process aimed to support the development of a consensus and contribute to the formulation of clinical practice guidelines for the management of the edentulous maxilla. Materials and Methods: In preparation for the 1st Global Consensus for Clinical Guidelines for the rehabilitation of the edentulous maxilla, a structured questionnaire was developed. The survey was administered online anonymously in a single round. It consisted of multiple-choice items and 94 7-point Likert-scale statements and questions. Consensus was defined as >75% and ≤95% agreement or disagreement, and strong consensus as >95% agreement or disagreement. Results: Of the 217 experts invited from 43 countries, 116 successfully completed the questionnaire via the survey link, resulting in a response rate of 53.5%. Among the 94 statements and questions, 44 (46.8%) reached consensus and 4 (4.3%) strong consensus. All statements that achieved strong consensus pertained to key clinician-reported outcomes considered essential for inclusion in future research. There was strong agreement on the importance of evaluating surgical, prosthetic, and biological complications, along with marginal bone loss. Conclusion: This study collected valuable expert opinions to inform a consensus development process and contribute to the formulation of clinical practice guidelines for the management of the edentulous maxilla in complex cases requiring additional augmentation procedures.Ítem 1st Global Consensus for Clinical Guidelines for the Rehabilitation of the Edentulous Maxilla: A Single-Round Survey on the Number of Implants, Timing of Implant Placement, and Loading for Fixed Restorations.(John Wiley & Sons Ltd., 2026-02) Schoenbaum, Todd R.Objectives: To gather the opinions and preferences of experts regarding the number of implants used to support a fixed prosthesis in the edentulous maxilla, timing of implant placement, and timing of implant loading. This was performed using a single-round survey methodology. The primary objective was to support the development of a consensus and contribute to the formulation of clinical practice guidelines for the management of the edentulous maxilla. Materials and Methods: A custom survey instrument was created by a steering committee and team of experts for the 1st Global Consensus for Clinical Guidelines. The anonymous survey was conducted using a single-round survey method. Consensus was defined as >75% and ≤95% agreement or disagreement, and strong consensus as >95% agreement or disagreement. Results: A total of 202 experts from 42 different countries were identified and invited to participate. 117 provided consent and completed the questionnaire, resulting in a response rate of 57.9%. Strong consensus (>95%) reached on no items. Consensus (>75% and ≤95%) reached on four items: always using CBCT for planning, first molar as distal-most implant site for full-arch fixed prosthesis, use of a lab-fabricated acrylic provisional for full-arch fixed prosthesis, and the use of 4 implants to retain a removable maxillary denture. Conclusion: This survey synthesized the preferences and opinions of experts regarding implant number, timing, and loading for the fixed rehabilitation of the edentulous maxilla to inform a consensus development process and contribute to the formulation of clinical practice guidelines for the management of the edentulous maxilla.Ítem 1st Global Consensus for Clinical Guidelines for the Rehabilitation of the Edentulous Maxilla: Patient and Cross-Disciplinary Expert Single-Round Surveys(John Wiley & Sons Ltd, 2026-02) Lin, Guo-HaoObjectives: To gather perspectives from patients and cross-disciplinary experts on treatment practices and outcomes in managing the edentulous maxilla to inform a structured consensus process and highlight areas for future research. Materials and Methods: An 18-item single-round survey was distributed in November 2024 with 68 patients and 68 cross-disciplinary experts. Participation was voluntary, anonymous, incentive-free, and required informed consent. Consensus was defined as >75% and ≤95% agreement or disagreement, and strong consensus as >95% agreement or disagreement. Results: Response rates were 60.3% among patients, and 30.9% among cross-disciplinary experts. Consensus or strong consensus was achieved by patients on 15 statements across nine items and by cross-disciplinary experts on 15 statements across eight items. Items reaching consensus included the use of cone-beam computed tomography, preference for fixed full-arch prostheses, major treatment outcomes, need for hard tissue augmentation, home care regimens, dental implant lifespan, procedure difficulty, cost-effectiveness, and patient-reported outcomes. Both groups also highlighted the need for further research on full-arch implant rehabilitation of the maxilla. Conclusion: Findings from both surveys inform the development of clinical practice guidelines in treating the edentulous maxilla by providing valuable perspectives from patients and cross-disciplinary experts. Areas lacking consensus illustrate real-world variations in treatment approaches, highlight knowledge gaps in the current literature, and reveal important differences among patient expectations, expert opinions, and available evidence.Ítem 1st Global Consensus for Clinical Guidelines for the Rehabilitation of the Edentulous Maxilla: Single-Round Survey on Implant-Supported Fixed and Removable Prostheses.(John Wiley & Sons Ltd, 2026-02) Lin, Guo-HaoObjectives: This single-round survey on prosthodontic rehabilitation of the edentulous maxilla is one of four clinician surveys commissioned prior to the first Global Consensus for Clinical Guidelines (GCCG). Within the GCCG aim of refining treatment protocols and enhancing patient care, this survey gathered expert insights into best practices, challenges, and treatment outcomes for these complex restorative procedures. Materials and Methods: The 25-item survey was sent to 230 identified experts from 41 countries in October 2024. Participation in the survey was voluntary and without incentives. Informed consent was obtained at the beginning of the survey. All data were collected, stored, and processed anonymously. Results: Of the 230 experts contacted, 123 accessed the survey and 121 provided consent and completed the questionnaire, resulting in a response rate of 52.6%. The survey responses identified 13 statements that reached consensus (>75% but ≤ 95% agreement) and five that reached strong consensus (>95% agreement). These 18 statements were derived from 6 items addressing the topics of anatomical landmarks for tooth positioning, preferred distal implant position, preferred minimum implant diameter, preferred retention method, relevant patient-reported outcomes, and relevant clinician-reported outcomes. Conclusion: This study gathered valuable expert insights to inform a consensus development process for establishing clinical practice guidelines for management of the edentulous maxilla. The survey identified 18 statements from six items that reached consensus or strong consensus among survey respondents. Conclusión: El modelo deliberativo demostró ser una herramienta útil para abordar dilemas clínicos en contextos complejos; sin embargo, se requiere complementarlo con enfoques que integren la realidad social y promuevan activamente la autonomía progresiva del paciente pediátrico.Ítem Análisis de longitud de obturación del conducto radicular en tratamientos endodónticos realizados por estudiantes de pregrado de odontología(Universidad de Concepción, 2024-07-29) Mora, JoaquínIntroduction: Cross-sectional observational study whose purpose was to analyze the length of root canal obturation, according to the Barrieshi-Nussair criteria, in endodontic treatments performed by undergraduate students at the School of Dentistry at Finis Terrae University, in the year 2022.Results: 88.5% obtained an acceptable obturation length, 6.7% were overfilled and 4.8% were underfilled. Regarding the academic year, in the 4th year, 77.8% of the endodontic treatments had an acceptable obturation length; in the 5th year, 89.4%; and in the 6th year, 90%. In the lower jaw, 89.3% were acceptable and in the upper jaw, 88.2% were acceptable. In the incisor group, 83.3% achieved an acceptable obturation length, 100% in the canines and 89.1% in the premolars. Conclusion: The results obtained in this study were superior to some described in the Middle East, lower or similar to those found in Europe, and comparable to others reported in Chile. In all variables, the percentage of acceptable obturation length according to the Barrieshi-Nusair criteria was predominant (77.8% for 4th, 89.4% for 5th, 90% for 6th, 89.3% for mandible, 88.2% for maxilla, 83.3% for incisors, 100% for canines and 89.1% for premolars). This high percentage of acceptable treatments may be due, among other factors, to the use of the electronic apical locator and the accompaniment of specialists during undergraduate training and endodontic treatment.Ítem Antimicrobial effect of copper nanoparticles on relevant supragingival oral bacteria(MDPI, 2024-03-20) Oetiker, NiaCopper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) show promise in dentistry for combating bacterial dysbiosis and tooth decay. Understanding their effects on commensal versus pathogenic bacteria is vital for maintaining oral health balance. While Cu NPs demonstrate antibacterial properties against various oral bacteria, including common pathogens associated with tooth decay, their impact on commensal bacteria requires careful examination. In our work, we analyzed three types of Cu NPs for their effects on the growth, viability, and biofilm formation of representative caries-associated and commensal oral bacteria. S. sanguinis showed high tolerance to all Cu NPs, while L. rhamnosus was highly sensitive. Oxide-Cu NPs exhibited a stronger inhibitory effect on pathobionts compared with commensal bacteria. Moreover, the biofilm formation of the key cariogenic bacteria S. mutans was reduced, with minimal negative effects on commensal species’ biofilm formation. All our results showed that CuO nanoparticles (CuO NPs) exhibit reduced toxicity toward commensal bacteria growth and development but have a strong impact on pathogens. This suggests their potential for targeted treatments against pathogenic bacteria, which could help in maintaining the balance of the oral bacterial community.Ítem Anxiety disorders in chilean adolescents: a study of their relationship with multidimensional poverty at the regional level(Antena Editora, 2025-02-04) Moya, PatriciaIntroduction. Anxiety in adolescents is a common emotional response, but when it becomes chronic, it can have a significant impact on their well-being and development. Factors such as stress, social relationships and family pressures can trigger it, while poverty can aggravate it, creating an even more challenging environment that negatively affects their emotional development. Objective. To analyze the rate of low control of adolescents admitted for Anxiety disorders in the Mental Health Program in Primary Care in Chile during the period 2013 to 2022 and its relationship with Multidimensional Poverty at the regional level. Materials and Method. Ecological study in adolescent beneficiaries of FONASA (National Health Fund), who register being under control in the Mental Health program in the period 2013-2022 for diagnosis of Anxiety Disorders (AT). The rate of adolescents under control was estimated according to sex, region and year per 1000 beneficiaries and regional average multidimensional poverty. Percentage variation (PPV) between 2013 and 2022 and rate ratio (RR) were calculated to evaluate differences by sex. Results. During the study period, 7 out of every 1000 adolescents in the country are under control in the Mental Health Program due to AT, being 2.4 times higher in females than in males (RT = 2.376, 95%CI: [2.21-2.54]). All regions experienced an increase in the rate of AT, except Valparaíso. Araucanía had the highest percentage of population living in multidimensional poverty (24.9%), followed by Atacama (23.1%) and Tarapacá (22.5%), with no relationship with the AT rate (p=0.206). Conclusion. The results show a significant increase of adolescents under control for Anxiety Disorders, being 2.4 times higher in women and generalized at national level. No statistically significant relationship was found between multidimensional poverty and anxiety disorders, suggesting that other factors could be influencing their development.Ítem Anxiety levels in dental students of a private university in Chile(Atena editora, 2024-10) Moya, PatriciaIntroduction: A career in dentistry is characterized by high demands both academically and psychologically. In addition to the demands of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, working with patients can also provoke high levels of anxiety in students. Added to this scenario is the context of the COVID-19 pandemic experienced by students. Objective: To determine the levels of anxiety in dental students at a private university in Chile. Material and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in dental students in the first to sixth years of the course. Informed consent to participate was requested prior to the application of the instrument. Anxiety levels were measured with the Zung Anxiety Scale. In the statistical analysis, the anxiety levels of the students were described according to sex (male/female), course (first to sixth year) and dimension (affective and somatic). The study was approved by the Scientific Ethics Committee of the University. Results: 175 students agreed to participate in the study, 75.4% of them were women. Eighty-four percent of the dental students showed some level of anxiety, with minimal to moderate anxiety being the most prevalent. The mean score obtained was 45 points (SD 9.8). The level of anxiety was higher in women and in the first year of the course (p<0.05). Conclusion: High levels of anxiety are reported in dental students, with significant differences by sex and course. It is suggested to implement strategies to address this situation, considering that it is a risk factor for the academic performance of the students.Ítem Atención de urgencia por ideación suicida en Chile, periodo 2020 al 2022(Clínica Las Condes, 2024-11-11) Moya, Patricia; 0000-0002-8442-2571Introducción: La ideación suicida es un factor de riesgo común asociado al suicidio y un importante indicador para su prevención. Conclusión: Este estudio muestra un conocimiento deficiente sobre traumatismo dento alveolar en docentes, lo que puede condicionar un mal pronóstico del diente.Ítem Contribution of dentistry technicians in primary health care in Chile 2017-2020(Atena editora, 2024) Moya, PatriciaIntroduction: In Chile, oral health is a priority in the health field and represents a fundamental challenge for health services aiming to guarantee universal and equitable access for the population. In Primary Health Care (PHC), the team includes higher-level dental technicians (TONS) who can play a fundamental role in providing more timely dental care, allowing us to respond to the oral health needs of the population. The number of dental activities performed by the technicians was detailed, grouped by sex, age group and type of service was detailed. The frequency of dental activities was determined for each year of study, as well as the trend of activities in the study period. Results: A total of 25,459,254 dental activities were registered by dentists and 1,496,237 by dental technicians, representing 6% of the total activities. In 2017, 4.58% of total dental activities were performed by technicians, a figure that increased to 6.0% in 2020, showing a slight upward trend (R2=0.71). Intraoral radiographs were the most common activity. Conclusion: The activities performed by dental technicians contribute to the care provided by dentist in primary care, mainly in taking intraoral x-rays.Ítem Desdentamiento parcial y total en adultos: estudio radiográfico en un entorno clínico universitario(Universidad de Tarapacá, 2025-08-20) Verdugo, BrunoEstimar la prevalencia de desdentamiento parcial y total en pacientes atendidos en un entorno clínico universitario, y su asociación con variables demográficas. Estos hallazgos subrayan la necesidad de fortalecer estrategias preventivas y rehabilitadoras, especialmente enfocadas en grupos vulnerables y en promover el acceso temprano a servicios odontológicos.Ítem Detection of approximal caries lesions in adults: a cross-sectional study(Operative Dentistry, 2019) Urzúa, IvánDetection and management of posterior approximal caries lesions are still problematic. Inspection of approximal surfaces is challenging, and bitewing radiographs are used when direct vision is not possible. Unfortunately, there is no definite radiographic appearance to identify lesion cavitation with absolute certainty. Many lesions detected radiographically within the outer half of dentin are not cavitated, often resulting in unnecessary restorative treatment. Our study compared radiographic depth of approximal caries lesions with presence of cavitation in adults using visual inspection following temporary tooth separation (TTS). We conducted this observational descriptive cross-sectional study at two dental schools in two cities in Chile. Clinicians were unaware of radiographic depths of lesions and examined 147 participants (57.3% female and 42.7% male) following TTS. Using the common classification system that consists of E0 (no lesion), E1 (lesion within the outer half of enamel), E2 (lesion within the inner half of enamel), D1 (lesion within the outer third of dentin), D2 (lesion within the middle third of dentin), and D3 (lesion within the inner third of dentin), a trained dentist evaluated all the processed films. Cavitation was detected in only three sites (0.22%) within the E0 category, seven sites (3.41%) in E1, five sites (14.8%) in E2, four sites (14.8%) in D1, six sites (50%) in D2, and eight sites (61.5%) in D3. Considering that restorative treatment should be indicated strictly for cavitated lesions, our findings support indication for restorative treatment for D3 lesions and the rationale for TTS for D1-D2 caries lesions to allow direct visual inspection to determine whether there is surface cavitation.Ítem Determinantes estructurales relacionados con la tasa de consulta de urgencia odontológica ambulatoria en una zona fronteriza de Chile(Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, 2025-09-30) Moya, PatriciaObjetivo: Analizar los determinantes estructurales relacionados con la consulta de urgencia odontológica ambulatoria (UOA) en una zona fronteriza de Chile entre los años 2021 y 2024.
