Comparación del nivel de somnolencia diurna entre estudiantes de primer y quinto año de la carrera de odontología de la Universidad Finis Terrae en el año 2022

Resumen
Introducción: La somnolencia diurna (SD) es un síntoma común de los trastornos del sueño, es la dificultad o incapacidad de mantener un estado de alerta durante el período de vigilia del día, generando sensación de cansancio, letargo, debilidad, falta de agilidad mental, y lapsus de sueño involuntarios. Esta privación del sueño está determinada principalmente por demandas académicas, actividades clínicas presenciales, responsabilidades familiares, actividades extra-programáticas, uso de tecnología y redes sociales antes de ir a dormir, consumo de sustancias estimulantes y medicación, contribuyendo a una mala calidad del sueño. El objetivo de este estudio es determinar sí existe mayor nivel de somnolencia diurna en los estudiantes de quinto año en comparación con los de primer año de la carrera de Odontología de la Universidad Finis Terrae en el año 2022
Materiales y métodos: Estudio observacional analítico de corte transversal, con una muestra poblacional de 31 estudiantes de primer y quinto año de odontología matriculados el año 2022 de la Universidad Finis Terrae, quienes respondieron a un cuestionario: “La escala de somnolencia de Epworth”.
Resultados: De la población total los estudiantes tenían una media de edad entre 18 y 30 años; de los 31 encuestados, el 22,6% eran hombres y el 77,4% eran mujeres. Se estableció que un 20% de los estudiantes de primer año y un 25% de los estudiantes de 5to año presentaban elevadas probabilidades de quedarse dormidos.
Conclusión: Al comparar los resultados de nivel de somnolencia de ambos cursos, no hubo una diferencia estadísticamente significativa al ir avanzando los años cursados dentro de la carrera de Odontología.

Materials and methods: Cross-sectional analytical observational study, with a population sample of 31 first and fifth year dentistry students enrolled in 2022 at Finis Terrae University, who responded to a questionnaire: ""Epworth sleepiness scale"". Results: Of the total population, the students had an average age between 18 and 30 years; Of the 31 respondents, 22.6% were men and 77.4% were women. It was established that 20% of first-year students and 25% of 5th-year students had a high probability of falling asleep. Conclusion: When comparing the results of the level of sleepiness of both courses, there was no statistically significant difference as the years of the Dentistry degree progressed.
