| dc.description.abstract | Background: Presently, diverse methods for detecting caries lesions are employed in dental education. Among these methodologies, the ICDAS and ICCM systems are utilized for the diagnosis of caries lesions and their respective activity statuses, extensively incorporated into undergraduate courses. Objective: The aim of this study is to elucidate the detection and assessment of caries lesion activity among 4th and 5th-year dental students at the University Finis Terrae. Materials and Methods: An online opinion checklist was administered, featuring clinical case photographs. Students executed classifications for each case utilizing the ICDAS and ICCMS systems to discern the presence of caries lesions and ascertain their level of progression. Results: Notably, 11.1% of fourth and fifth-year students accurately classified the caries lesion utilizing the ICCMS system as a severe, active caries lesion. Conversely, with respect to the evaluation of caries lesions using the ICDAS system, 20% of students classified the lesions as an ICDAS 1. Examining each academic year independently revealed a correct response rate of 55.44% for fourth-year students and 50.59% for fifthyear students. Discussion and Conclusions: Analysis of the acquired data allows the inference that, in relation to the criteria analyzed concerning the progression of caries lesions, the results manifest a limited adherence to the criteria stipulated by ICCMS. Nevertheless, a more favorable performance was observed in the context of caries lesion detection employing the ICDAS system. | en |
