Resumen

Background: Self-efficacy, defined as the expectation that a person has about their ability to manage daily stressors and their perception to use them to achieve their goals, is tested when rotating through emergency services. Objectives: to determine the relationship between self-efficacy and the academic performance of medical interns at the end of their emergency internship in a public hospital during the second semester of 2023. Materials and Methods: Quantitative, descriptive and observational study of “correlational scope”, transversal, prospective, non-experimental type. Results: The results revealed that all interns showed a high level of self-efficacy, regardless of their academic performance. Self-efficacy was evaluated in two dimensions: attention and participation, both with high values, especially participation. High academic performance was also evident overall in the sample. Discussions and conclusions: No direct relationship was found between perceived self-efficacy and academic performance. Proving the hypothesis that all medical interns achieve a higher degree or level of self-efficacy after finishing their emergency rotation. These findings suggest the need to design strategies that deliberately promote self-efficacy in medical students during their formative years, as it is a key component in medical training.
