This thesis analyses the implementation of the Escazu Agreement in Chile, a key international treaty for Latin America and the Caribbean, focused on guaranteeing access to information, public participation and access to justice in environmental matters. Given Chile's recent ratification of the agreement in 2022, this research posed the following question: What is the current status and challenges of the implementation of the Escazú Agreement in Chile? To address this question, a qualitative analysis of Chile's current environmental regulations was carried out, contrasting them with the international commitments acquired with the ratification of the Agreement. In addition, the main political, legal and operational challenges faced by the country in this implementation process were identified. The research findings underline that, although Chile has demonstrated a firm commitment to environmental protection through robust legal frameworks, it still faces significant obstacles in the full implementation of the Escazú Agreement. These include the need for further legislative harmonisation, institutional strengthening and the allocation of adequate financial resources. However, important opportunities for advancing environmental sustainability and democratic participation in the country are also recognised, if these challenges are overcome.
