Resumen

Introduction: Partial edentulousness has consequences on general health and on the masticatory system. Knowing the distribution of the patterns of edentulousness allows for adequate oral rehabilitation. Objective: To determine the distribution of the Kennedy Classes of the arches of partially edentulous patients between 20 and 90 years of age, from the imaging service of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Finis Terrae University (UFT), between 2019 and 2021. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive observational study. A total of 646 complete periapical digital radiographs of maxillary and mandibular partial edentulous patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were studied. The frequency of edentulousness of each arch was estimated according to sex and age group, applying Kennedy's classification, using graphs and percentage distribution tables. Results: Class III is the most frequent classification of the arches being 59.6%; in the maxilla it corresponds to 64.4% and in the mandible 54.7%. Class III was the most frequent in both sexes, being 59.6% in men (67% in maxillae and 52.1% in male mandibles) and 59.5% in women (63.1% in maxillae and 56.1% in female mandibles). In the different age groups from 20 to 90 years, the most frequent classification was class III in maxillae and mandibles, being more frequent in the 25-44 years age group with 79.3% of the arches, with the exception of the 80-90 years mandibular group, where class I was more frequent (44.4%). Conclusions: Class III was the most frequently found in both arches in both males and females and in the different age groups. Kennedy class III was more frequent in the 45-64 years age group. Only in the mandibular group between 80-90 years Class I was more frequent. Key words: tooth loss; partial edentulism, removable partial denture, Kennedy classification, digital dental radiography.
