Ítem Intelligent Grid Support with VPPs: A Scalable Solution for PMGD Integration Challenges(IEEE Xplore, 2026-04-20) Córdova, Felisa; Yanine, Fernando; de Saint Pierre, Thierry; Rother, Hans; Aly, MokhtarPower quality issues and blackouts in electric distribution systems, such as the recent outage affecting Spain and parts of Portugal, are increasingly linked to grid imbalances caused by the growing penetration of Distributed Generation (DG), particularly medium-sized photovoltaic plants (PMGD). These systems inject all their power into the grid, often causing disturbances in the grid's power supply. They also require constant coordination with nonrenewable backup plants, leading to instability in frequency and voltage. To address these challenges, Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) offer a scalable and rapidly deployable solution, integrating large-scale energy storage, advanced diagnostics, and real-time control to provide ancillary services, stabilize supply, and reduce the burden on traditional infrastructure. There is also a need to rapidly diagnose the grid's disturbances and readily intervene to remediate the condition. In this paper, the need for VPP in renewable energy-rich power grids is discussed. A solution termed SiVUr is introduced, which helps diagnose and then intervene the grid with VPP, employing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimize the VPP's effectiveness in mitigating disturbances. This solution creates dynamic interactions between DERs and loads, which is crucial for modern power grids. As PMGD integration accelerates, it becomes essential to maintain the grid's reliability, flexibility, and service quality in increasingly complex and decentralized energy environments.
