Una lectura de 0 espelho desde el holismo semántico moderado(CENALTES Ediciones, 2026-06-01) Dantas Freitas Estrela, Kênio AngeloEste artículo analiza el cuento O Espelho (1882), de Machado de Assis, desde la perspectivadel holismo semántico moderado, con el fin de mostrar que la identidad personal puede entenderse como un fenómeno discursivo cuya estabilidad depende de redes de creencias, prácticas de reconocimiento y anclajes semánticos situados. Frente a lecturas psicológicas centradas en la interioridad del personaje, se sostiene que la crisis de Jacobina constituye una desestabilización semántica de la autoreferencia: cuando se retiran las prácticas sociales que lo nombran y lo confirman, el significado del yo se vuelve difuso e indeterminado. La reaparición del uniforme funciona entonces como un dispositivo de reanclaje que reactiva una economía contextual de relevancias, permitiendo recomponer provisionalmente la identidad. El cuento opera así como un laboratorio literario para observar la dependencia semántica del yo y la fragilidad de la identidad cuando fallan sus condiciones discursivas This article analyzes Machado de Assis’s short story O Espelho (1882) from the perspective of moderate semantic holism, arguing that personal identity can be understood as a discursive phenomenon whose stability depends on networks of belief, practices of recognition, and context-sensitive semantic anchors. Rather than adopting a psychological reading focused on inner life, the paper interprets Jacobina’s crisis as a semantic destabilization of self-reference: when the social practices that name and confirm him withdraw, the meaning of the self becomes blurred and indeterminate. The military uniform functions as a reanchoring device that restores identity by reorganizing a contextual economy of relevance. On this view, the story operates as a literary laboratory for examining the semantic dependence of the self and the fragility of identity once its discursive conditions collapse.Ítem Holismo e individuação em Quine: rumo a uma ontologia linguística mínima(Pontificia Universidade Católica de Goiás, 2026-06-08) Dantas Freitas Estrela, Kênio Angeloneste artigo, proponho uma releitura do holismo em Quine que vai além da tradicional associação ao ensaio Dois Dogmas do Empirismo. Defendo que as formulações mais densas de seu holismo semântico se encontram na teoria da tradução radical e na concepção do aprendizado linguístico, especialmente nos textos Speaking of Objects e Word and Object. Ao retomar os exemplos do “gavagai” e da aquisição infantil da linguagem, argumento que a noção de individuação ocupa um lugar estrutural em sua filosofia. Com base nisso, sustento que o holismo quineano não se reduz à interdependência semântica entre sentenças, mas aponta para uma ontologia linguística mínima, na qual o significado emerge de processos relacionais de estabilização conceitual. Dialogo criticamente com as objeções de Fodor e Lepore e proponho uma atualização do holismo em chave semânticoontológica, com implicações para os debates contemporâneos sobre linguagem, referência e constituição do sentido. in this article, I propose a reinterpretation of holism in Quine that goes beyond its traditional association with Two Dogmas of Empiricism. I argue that the strongest formulations of his semantic holism are found in his theory of radical translation and his conception of language learning, especially in Speaking of Objects and Word and Object. By revisiting the examples of “gavagai” and early language acquisition, I suggest that the notion of individuation plays a structural role in Quine’s philosophical framework. Based on this, I claim that Quinean holism is not limited to semantic interdependence among sentences, but points to a minimal linguistic ontology in which meaning emerges through relational processes of conceptual stabilization. I critically engage with the objections raised by Fodor and Lepore, and I advance a semantic-ontological reading of Quine that contributes to contemporary debates on language, reference, and the constitution of meaning.Ítem Understanding beyond knowledge. Fiction, models, and cognitive gain(Philosophy Documentation Center, 2026-06-18) Dantas Freitas Estrela, Kênio AngeloThis paper examines the epistemic status of understanding and argues that it cannot be adequately reduced to propositional knowledge or to justified true belief. The analysis challenges strictly truth-centered accounts of cognition and defends a conception of understanding grounded in structured interpretive engagement with representational systems. Drawing on recent debates in epistemology and philosophy of science that distinguish understanding from knowledge (e.g., Kvanvig 2003; Grimm 2006; de Regt 2017), the paper situates understanding as a distinct epistemic achievement with its own normative profile, irreducible to belief or information possession. It is argued that scientific models, literary fictions, and contemporary AI-mediated representations systematically rely on idealized or non-literal structures that nonetheless yield genuine epistemic gains. The central claim is that understanding arises through norm-governed practices of interpretation and use, rather than through the mere accumulation of accurate propositions. Scientific models contribute to understanding by isolating explanatory dependencies, fictional narratives afford experiential, perspectival, and meaning-structuring insight, and AI systems support human understanding by facilitating linguistically mediated exploratory and interpretive activities. In each case, departures from literal truth function as epistemically productive constraints rather than as defects. By articulating a unified framework that accounts for these practices, the paper clarifies the relationship between understanding and knowledge and defends the legitimacy of fictional and idealized representations as indispensable components of human sense-making and cognition.
