Abstract
dibujantes Antonio Smith (1832-1877) y Pedro Subercaseaux (1880-1956), respectivamente. Ambas publicaciones introdujeron
The purpose of this work is to analyze the relevance that the press of the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries had for the process of shaping the local artistic sphere, specifically in its branch of graphic arts. For this, we review in detail what happened in the mid-1800s with El Correo Literario, and the early 1900s with Zig-Zag, where Antonio Smith (1832-1877) and Pedro Subercaseaux (1880-1956) worked as cartoonists, respectively. Both publications introduced illustrations and satire, marking a true innovation both for the general circuit of the press, as well as for the reading public of both historical moments. The assumption of this article states that the immediate benefit that this produced for journalistic production also promoted the emergence and installation of a circuit of recognized cartoonists, who mostly came from the world of plastic arts. The analysis proposed here operationalizes the main contributions of the sociology of culture.
